Propane Outdoor Fireplace -
an alternative to natural gas

A propane outdoor fireplace is the best alternative for rural areas that do not have access to natural gas. Propane is a good alternative when you want a fireplace but don't want the mess involved with a wood burning fireplace. Your propane fireplace will also produce far fewer pollutants than a wood burning fireplace.

If you already have a masonry fireplace in your backyard, you can convert it to a propane outdoor fireplace with an outdoor fireplace insert. These inserts increase the efficiency of your existing fireplace so that more heat is produced during those cold winter months. Note that the fireplace logs used for a propane fireplace differ from those used for natural gas.

Propane Gas
Propane gas is a byproduct from the process to refine natural gas and crude oil. Generally, when propane is transported it is put in container under increased pressure so that it liquefies. The liquid propane immediately turns back into gas once the container is open so that gas is burned in your fireplace. Generally, it is better to burn propane than wood for the following reasons:

Vent Free Fireplace and Direct Vent Fireplace
Just like the natural gas fireplace, there are basically two types of propane fireplaces: vent free and direct vent . These links refer to a natural gas fireplace, but the same information applies to the propane fireplace. These fireplaces allow for a fire at a higher temperature than a wood burning fire and in addition produce fewer pollutants. Gas and propane fireplaces have grown in popularity partly because, these fires create significantly less pollution than a wood burning fireplace.

Propane Fireplace Insert
An outdoor fireplace insert consists of propane logs inside a firebox surrounded by a metal shell. Air flows into the shell which is then heated by the fire, and then redistributed back through the glass enclosure. This insert is designed to fit inside an existing masonry fireplace. The advantage is that you will have the look of a traditional fireplace, but you do not need to clean up ashes or soot. A propane fireplace insert must be used on a fully functioning stone or brick fireplace because it needs the same ventilation as a wood burning fireplace. The byproducts of combustion are carried out through the chimney.

Propane outdoor Fireplace Maintenance
During the season when you are using the fireplace a lot, you may need to clean the glass enclosure once or twice a week. Dirt may stick to the glass. The glass should be cleaned with a non-ammonia cleanser. In addition to this cleaning, every few months you will need to clean the burner ports. Over time they may collect dust.
